Celebrating National LGBTQ Health Awareness Week
We here at Within Reach Therapy believe that access to quality, affordable healthcare is a human right that ought to be afforded to all Americans, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity. This is why we are so passionate about National LGBTQ Health Awareness Week. It’s held this year from March 20-24, and it helps promote awareness of the importance of safeguarding our individual and collective rights.
The percentage of Americans who identify as part of the LGBTQ+ community has more than doubled in the last ten years. Yet LGBTQ+ people face significant challenges to accessing healthcare, including delays, denials, and discrimination from both insurers and medical practitioners.
Currently, at least 28 states lack clear non-discrimination laws that include sexual orientation, gender identity, and/or gender expression. Additionally, the introduction of new anti-LGBT legislation across the country is a major concern, especially since many states continue to receive already failing grades on the Human Rights Campaign’s State Equality Index.
But it doesn’t have to be this way.
Whether you are part of the LGBTQ+ community, an advocate or ally, or a healthcare professional, we invite you to join us in the fight for equal rights and awareness of these issues. We believe we’re stronger together, and all our voices together can make a difference.
